About

The Guthrie United Church Cemetery, located at 3083 Tatlock Road in Mississippi Mills,
was originally opened by the Presbyterian Church of Clayton in 1883. When the Presbyterian
congregation joined local Methodists as part of church union in 1925, ownership of the
cemetery was deeded to the new congregation, known as Guthrie United Church, Clayton. It
has continued to be operated by the church as a community cemetery, welcoming people of all
faiths.

Visitors

Visitors are welcome to walk through the cemetery at any time to visit the graves, search for information on the monuments, or simply rest on a bench and enjoy the quiet and beauty of the grounds.

Operation

The cemetery operates under the Funeral, Burial, and Cremation Services Act (2002) which is administered by The Bereavement Authority of Ontario (BAO). A Consumer Information Guide is available at www.TheBAO.ca. Ongoing maintenance and operation of the cemetery is the responsibility of Guthrie Church and is carried out by the caretaker and the secretary treasurer under the direction of the Cemetery Committee.

The cemetery employs no staff, but information can be obtained from the caretaker, who works on a contract basis, and will respond to messages, or from the secretary treasurer who is a volunteer.

The church is very grateful for the many generous memorial donations made each year which enable us to maintain this place of beauty and peace to honour the memory of our loved ones.

Services

The cemetery offers both traditional plots for earth burial throughout the grounds and smaller plots suitable for cremation urns in the Memorial Garden.

Traditional plots are priced at $700 for one position, and cremation plots at $500 for two positions. A $100 fee for opening and closing a grave is payable at time of use. The fee for having a monument installed varies according to the size with $100 as the minimum.

Information on the purchase of interment rights (commonly known as plots), conditions of sale, and pricing for any other services requested can be obtained from the caretaker.

Rules

Floral tributes and small unbreakable ornaments which do not interfere with maintenance may be left at graves with the following restrictions:

  • To ensure the safety of workers and visitors, no glass or other breakable containers or other potentially hazardous materials are permitted in the cemetery.
  • To allow regular maintenance no items may be left in the memorial garden with the exception of cut flowers on decoration weekend.
  • Any items left in the cemetery which begin to detract from the overall appearance (eg dead flowers), or interfere with regular maintenance, will be removed by the caretaker.
